The Story Behind The Name Compass & Light

Why is it called Compass and Light Counseling? Discover the story and meaning behind the name and how it reflects a compassionate approach to therapy.

           Why Compass and Light?

The way a compass works provides the best illustration of my approach to therapy.

We know compasses help guide people and keep them from getting lost, but do you know how a compass actually works? It’s pretty cool. A compass simply is a magnet that is designed to spin freely. That magnet responds to the Earth’s magnetic field and aligns itself with Earth’s northern and southern, helping us orient ourselves and find our direction.

So what does that have to do with therapy? Too often, I have seen and experienced people use a one-size-fits-all approach to therapy where someone else is telling you how you should heal, what choices you should make, or what path you should follow.

In my experience, it doesn’t feel good to sit across from someone who seems more focused on directing your life than understanding it.

          Instead,

my approach begins with helping you clarify what matters most to you.

What are your grounding principles? What values guide your decisions? What’s the ‘magnetic core’ that all your actions filter through?

There isn’t one universally “right” direction for everyone. We all move through the world with different values, goals, fears, and hopes.

Once we better understand your internal compass, we can work together to identify which direction you want to head in

and help your thoughts, actions, and emotions align with that vision too.

And when you lose your way at times, because we all do, that’s where the light comes in! After we have clarified your core values and created a roadmap for where you want to go,

we can begin shining a gentle, curious light on the patterns that keep pulling you off course.

Maybe it’s anxiety, people-pleasing, self-doubt, unhealthy relationship patterns, or troubling thoughts that play endlessly in your mind.

Rather than judging those patterns, we’ll explore them together with compassion and curiosity.

We’ll work to understand where they came from, what purpose they’ve served, and what new ways of responding may help you move forward with greater clarity, confidence, and peace.

Compass and Light Counseling is rooted in the belief that healing is not about becoming more like someone else. You already have tools and skillsets that we can use and sharpen.

In our work, we'll equip you with the clarity and skills you need to trust yourself again

and choose the path that feels most aligned, healthy, and meaningful for you. Then, when life gets hard, you'll be able to lean into compassion, discernment, and accountability to continue your way forward.

Is Therapy Worth Paying for Out of Pocket?

Wondering if therapy is worth the cost? Learn the benefits of out-of-pocket therapy, including more control, fewer restrictions, and personalized mental health care.

Is Therapy Worth Paying for Out of Pocket?

If you’ve been considering therapy, you may have hesitated at the cost and wondered if therapy is really worth paying for out of pocket? It’s a valid question.

Here are important things for you to consider:

You’re investing in more than a weekly session

Therapy isn’t just a 50-minute conversation, it’s a structured, intentional process backed by evidence-based principles designed to help you gain lasting change and clarity in your life. How often do you get the chance to invest in yourself? How often do you get a chance to slow down and truly take stock of what’s working for you and what’s not. If we’re honest, we tend to take better stock of what’s in our kitchen pantries than what’s floating around our own minds.

Private-pay therapy often allows for more personalized, private care

Did you know that insurance companies require therapists to assign a clinical diagnosis in order to cover services? In many cases, they may also limit the number of sessions available based on that diagnosis. This means that people seeking support for concerns like people-pleasing, perfectionism, self-esteem, identity struggles, or relationship challenges may still receive a mental health diagnosis for insurance purposes, even if they don’t feel it fully reflects their experience.

With self-pay therapy, you have greater privacy and more control over your care. Your treatment is guided by your needs, not by session limits or insurance requirements. It also allows you to maintain more discretion over your medical record, which some people consider important when pursuing things like life insurance in the future.

Self-pay gives you the freedom to pursue the support you want and need without outside restrictions shaping the process.

Progress is often faster and more focused

When therapy is aligned with your personal goals rather than external insurance requirements, the work often becomes more intentional and effective. Instead of spending valuable session time meeting documentation standards or proving “medical necessity,” therapy can stay centered on what actually matters most to you. Many clients find that this flexibility creates deeper trust, more consistency, and greater emotional growth over time because the focus remains on meaningful healing, not checking boxes for insurance approval.

The cost of staying stuck is often higher

Ongoing stress, burnout, relationship strain, and emotional exhaustion don’t just stay in one area of life, they tend to ripple outward. Over time, they can impact your energy, focus, sleep, physical health, and even your ability to feel present in the relationships that matter most to you.

Many people don’t realize that what feels like “pushing through” or “just managing” often comes with hidden costs: missed opportunities, chronic overwhelm, increased conflict in relationships, or a persistent sense of disconnection from yourself. In some cases, these patterns can also lead to more frequent medical concerns, decreased productivity, or the need for more intensive support later on. Seeking support earlier can actually reduce these long-term costs.

What therapy can help you change

           How you respond to stress

How you relate to yourself and others

           Patterns that keep repeating

Your overall sense of clarity and direction

Pointing you towards what you actually want in life

Think of therapy as an investment—not an expense

The goal isn’t to be in therapy forever. One of my goals is to work myself out of a job and help you gain the tools and insight you need to move forward more confidently. While therapy is an investment, many people find that the relief, clarity, and improved quality of life it brings far outweigh the cost of continuing to carry everything alone.

If you’re on the fence about therapy, you don’t have to commit long-term right away. Starting with a consultation can help you decide whether it feels like the right fit.

Wondering if therapy could help? Learn 7 non-obvious signs you may benefit from therapy, even if your struggles don’t seem “serious enough.”

7 Signs You Might Need Therapy (That Aren’t Obvious)

You don’t have to be in crisis to benefit from therapy.

Therapy is great for any season of life so, as a therapist, I want to say

          simply being human

is a sign you might need therapy... but to dig a little deeper there are ways your mind and body scream for help that we often write off for weeks, months, and even years.

If your life looks “fine” from the outside, but internally things feel harder than they should and you’re wondering whether therapy might help, here are some signs that there are some deeper things to unpack:

          1. You feel constantly overwhelmed—even by small things

If everyday tasks feel disproportionately stressful, your nervous system may be overloaded.

          2. You’re exhausted, no matter how much you rest

This can be a sign of emotional fatigue, not just physical tiredness.

          3. You overthink everything

Replaying conversations, second-guessing decisions, or anticipating worst-case scenarios can point to underlying anxiety.

          4. You feel “numb” or disconnected

Not feeling much at all can be just as important as feeling too much.

          5. You’re easily irritated or reactive

When your emotional capacity is maxed out, even small frustrations can feel overwhelming. If you find yourself going from 0 to 10 when your dogs are underfoot, a squirrel is in your garden, or you realize you forgot something on your grocery list, your heart and mind are asking for relief.

          6. You keep falling into the same patterns

Whether it’s in relationships, work, or self-talk, repeating cycles often signal deeper, unprocessed experiences.

          7. You’ve tried to “fix it” on your own—but nothing sticks

If self-help strategies and advice from others haven’t led to lasting change, it may be time for more personalized support from a professional counselor.

You don’t have to wait until things get worse
