
Why Compass and Light?
The way a compass works provides the best illustration of my approach to therapy. We know compasses help guide people and keep them from getting lost, but do you know how a compass actually works? It’s pretty cool. A compass simply is a magnet that is designed to spin freely. That magnet responds to the Earth’s magnetic field and aligns itself with Earth’s northern and southern, helping us orient ourselves and find our direction.
So what does that have to do with therapy? Too often, I have seen and experienced people use a one-size-fits-all approach to therapy where someone else is telling you how you should heal, what choices you should make, or what path you should follow.
In my experience, it doesn’t feel good to sit across from someone who seems more focused on directing your life than understanding it.
Instead,
my approach begins with helping you clarify what matters most to you.
What are your grounding principles? What values guide your decisions? What’s the ‘magnetic core’ that all your actions filter through?
There isn’t one universally “right” direction for everyone. We all move through the world with different values, goals, fears, and hopes.
Once we better understand your internal compass, we can work together to identify which direction you want to head in and help your thoughts, actions, and emotions align with that vision too.
And when you lose your way at times, because we all do, that’s where the light comes in! After we have clarified your core values and created a roadmap for where you want to go,
we can begin shining a gentle, curious light on the patterns that keep pulling you off course.
Maybe it’s anxiety, people-pleasing, self-doubt, unhealthy relationship patterns, or troubling thoughts that play endlessly in your mind.
Rather than judging those patterns, we’ll explore them together with compassion and curiosity.
We’ll work to understand where they came from, what purpose they’ve served, and what new ways of responding may help you move forward with greater clarity, confidence, and peace.
Compass and Light Counseling is rooted in the belief that healing is not about becoming more like someone else. You already have tools and skillsets that we can use and sharpen. In our work, we'll equip you with the clarity and skills you need to trust yourself again and choose the path that feels most aligned, healthy, and meaningful for you. Then, when life gets hard, you'll be able to lean into compassion, discernment, and accountability to continue your way forward.
