7 Signs You Might Need Therapy (That Aren’t Obvious)

You don’t have to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Therapy is great for any season of life so, as a therapist, I want to say simply being human is a sign you might need therapy... but to dig a little deeper there are ways your mind and body scream for help that we often write off for weeks, months, and even years.

If your life looks “fine” from the outside, but internally things feel harder than they should and you’re wondering whether therapy might help, here are some signs that there are some deeper things to unpack:

1. You feel constantly overwhelmed—even by small things
If everyday tasks feel disproportionately stressful, your nervous system may be overloaded.

2. You’re exhausted, no matter how much you rest
This can be a sign of emotional fatigue, not just physical tiredness.

3. You overthink everything
Replaying conversations, second-guessing decisions, or anticipating worst-case scenarios can point to underlying anxiety.

4. You feel “numb” or disconnected
Not feeling much at all can be just as important as feeling too much.

5. You’re easily irritated or reactive
When your emotional capacity is maxed out, even small frustrations can feel overwhelming. If you find yourself going from 0 to 10 when your dogs are underfoot, a squirrel is in your garden, or you realize you forgot something on your grocery list, your heart and mind are asking for relief.

6. You keep falling into the same patterns
Whether it’s in relationships, work, or self-talk, repeating cycles often signal deeper, unprocessed experiences.

7. You’ve tried to “fix it” on your own—but nothing sticks
If self-help strategies and advice from others haven’t led to lasting change, it may be time for more personalized support from a professional counselor.

You don’t have to wait until things get worse
Therapy is the one space where you have an unbiased party dedicated to helping you understand yourself, build skills, and feel more in control of your life.
